How would you feel if you discovered that everything you thought you knew about yourself and your family was a lie? Confused? Betrayed? Devastated?
Yes, I thought so.
And that’s exactly how Jamie Valentine, the heroine of That Chesapeake Summer felt when she found documents in her late parents’ home that contradicted everything she believed about who she was. Not only does she feel totally lost, but as the author of a series of books about the importance of honesty in all relationships, she feels like a huge fraud. After much soul-searching, Jamie goes to the one place where she suspects the truth might lie: St. Dennis, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Widower Dan Sinclair has been running the Inn at Sinclair’s Point since he graduated from college following his father’s death. As a single parent, he hasn’t time for much beyond raising his two kids (his daughter is fifteen going on twenty-two) and running the inn that has been in his family for generations. He isn’t particularly impressed when he meets Jamie other than to admire the way she looks. That habit she has of putting in her two cents when they are least wanted annoys the devil out of him. Even worse, he’s certain that she’s hiding something, and the last thing in this world he’s looking for is a woman who keeps secrets. For her part, Jamie thinks Dan is a rude old fuddy-duddy who’s forgotten what it’s like to be a teenager who just wants to have fun, a man who would be happy if he could keep his daughter forever a five year old Daddy’s girl.
Dan’s mother, Grace, has a sixth sense about things (there are those in town who think perhaps she’s a witch and has magical powers, but Grace isn’t talking). She recognizes Jamie right away as the woman destined to bring joy back into her son’s life, but she’s determined not to interfere. Well, not overtly, anyway.
To see how these Jamie and Dan finally connect – with or without Grace’s help – pick up That Chesapeake Summer. The ninth book in the Chesapeake Diaries series, the story stands alone – but once you get a glimpse of life in the charming town of St. Dennis, Maryland, you’re going to want to go back and read the first eight books in the series.
