When you’re traveling — whether it’s an hour drive away or a 16 hour plane ride away — there is always one or two (or maybe thirteen) things you absolutely must have with you. New York Times bestselling author Kyra Davis chats with XOXOAD about what she can’t leave behind when traveling, especially on this #BellesOnWheels Bus Tour!

Once upon a time, I was a light packer. I know how to get the most out of an outfit. One pair of jeans and one skirt will get you through at least five days of travel if you pack the right tops & accessories. Back then it was almost unheard of for me to travel anywhere with more than a carry on. But then two things undermined my enviable model of packing efficiency: my growing obsession with skincare and the TSA’s 2006 decision to restrict the amount of liquids you can bring on a plane.

Do you know that EVERY good skincare product is a liquid??? My Bliss Triple Oxygen Energizing Mask, my Olay ProX Deep Wrinkle Treatment, my NeoCutis Lumière Bio-restorative Eye Cream, my CeraVe PM Moisturizing Lotion, my Elta MD sunscreen…did the TSA consider any of this?!?!

Now when I moved in with my fiancé one of the many wonderful things I discovered about him was that he doesn’t take any liquids on the plane. Not even toothpaste! He stays at these nice hotels that have these things called “Dental Kits” and “Shaving Kits” and so he has the luxury of liquidless travel! Which of course means that when I travel with him I can bring two 1-quart bags on the plane! We just say that the Ziploc containing the eye-cream and serum is his.

But of course he’s not traveling with me now as I wing it south for the bus tour, which means I had to make a decision: leave behind some of my precious liquids or check a bag and hope that my Bliss Oxygen mask didn’t burst into an explosion of revitalizing foam while in the cargo hold.

I went for option B. I just can’t travel over 2000 miles in an air-conditioned bus without an army of antioxidant-packin’ moisturizers. I just can’t. And last night, as I lined up my various products on the counter of the hotel like little jewels, a lovely and fitting tribute to how the cosmetic industry has turned so many of us into narcissistic, wrinkle-fearing hysterics, I was comforted by the knowledge that I have indeed made the right decision. Because by checking a bag I was also able to pack my makeup. I don’t always wear make-up but when doing 7 events in 7 cities in 6 days? I’m sorry, but these are the times when a girl needs her under-eye concealer.

So bring it on Birmingham, I’m ready for my close up. Oh, and if you stop by one of the #BellesOnWheels signings feel free to tell me about your favorite skincare product.

Did I mention that I’m obsessed?
