While I was in Australia, I had the chance to pop in to the Simon & Schuster offices in Sydney and talk to the crack publishing team there. Not only are all these ladies (and the lone gent!) tons of fun, but they love books, reading, and most of all, readers!
Australians embrace a lot of US and UK pop culture, so it’s not uncommon for books originally published here to also have a life in the Australian market. And not just books–the country is preparing for its very first season of The Bachelor! (Oh, to be a Bachelor virgin again!) I urged Carol, the head webmaster of The Sweet Escape (XOXOAD’s counterpart) to recap it for their site–you know I’ll be reading, at least.
S&S Australia’s offices are cool and industrial, and Managing Director Lou Johnson told me it was important that their space feel like a creative location, to reflect the work that goes on there. She had her team think of words and quotes that evoked creativity, and then a graffiti artist applied them to the exposed concrete walls. The end result is great, as you can see even in my blurry iPhone pics.
I came away from my visit not only excited to have met some terrific book people, but reminded of how strong the worldwide community of readers is. So next time you’re up in the middle of the night (since they’re on the other side of the world from us), take a peek at The Sweet Escape and see what those Aussies are up to!
