The next “major voice in Southern fiction” ( New York Times bestseller Elin Hilderbrand), Kristy Woodson Harvey, popped by XOXO to celebrate tomorrow’s release of her new novel, SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE, a charming story about a mother, her three daughters, and a secret that could potentially tear them apart. Here Kristy give us a peek into her life and shares her excitement for you to meet her beloved characters!
Hi, XOXO After Dark readers! I’m so thrilled to be here with you today. I can’t believe that my new novel, SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE, the first book in the Peachtree Bluff series, releases tomorrow. Writing about relationships between sisters and mothers and daughters is so much fun, and I couldn’t be more excited to get to spend a few novels with these characters. I hope that, come tomorrow, you’ll be reading my new book and fall in love with these women as much as I have. In the meantime, check out what I’m reading… And watching… And… Well, you get the picture!
Listening to: So, this is kind of embarrassing, but I’m actually listening to my own book, Slightly South of Simple. It’s so cool and sort of weird to hear someone else’s interpretation of my work and hear how it sounds coming out of someone else’s mouth. I read all of my work out loud over and over and over again, so I get really used to hearing the way it sounds when I say it. The narrators absolutely nailed it!
Reading: The Simplicity of Cider by Amy Reichert. The Coincidence of Coconut Cake and Love, Luck and Lemon Pie were as delicious as their titles, and Amy is an absolute doll. This girl knows how to craft a love story that is at once beautiful, funny, and so, so fun.
Watching: Is it June yet? I recently discovered Younger, which until now I had no idea is actually based on a novel published by the fabulous Gallery team. I’ve already flown through the first three seasons, and now I can’t wait until the next one! In the meantime I’m finally watching Z on Amazon and finally, finally watching Gossip Girl. I don’t know where I was when it came out, but it’s the perfect fiesty, fun, and a little melodramatic thing to watch on long flights on the SSoS tour. I, unfortunately, am plagued by motion sickness so no reading or working for me. Oh well … Serena and Blair’s antics are more fun than work anyway!
Eating: Ironically, while most people give up their vices, the weeks surrounding Easter are my total downfall when it comes to food. I am addicted to those little crunchy, chocolate Cadbury eggs—not the big creamy ones. And I justify how many I eat because I can only have them a few weeks a year. Generally, though, I’m a pretty healthy eater, and I love spring smoothies. Right now, my little guy and I start the morning by cutting spinach from our yard and throwing it in the blender. We add a little pumpkin, a couple handfuls of berries, half a banana, maca powder, cocoa powder, whey protein, and MCT oil. It’s yummy and filling. Plus, I feel like if the rest of the day is a dietary disaster, I at least did something right.
Going To: 92Y in NYC. I’ve never been and certainly never dreamed of speaking there. But, lo and behold, I’m launching Slightly South of Simple at the 92nd Street Y tomorrow night! Wow! It seems like once I said yes, it popped up everywhere from Odd Mom Out to Gilmore Girls. It’s so iconic, and, y’all, Caitlin Jenner is speaking tomorrow night too! (I had to break out the “y’all” at least once before this post was over!)
Thanks so much for having me today! And comment below to let me know what you’re reading right now!
