I remember very clearly my introduction to video games. Not arcade games, which are awesome, but the ones that brought the magic and fun into the home.
The device that brought that magic and fun into my home was the Atari game console. The games that kept me plopped in front of our old TV (you know, the 500-pound behemoths that only had four working channels and a manual dial for changing them,) were the super-simple Donkey Kong, Haunted House, Adventure, Missile Command, Asteroids, Pac-Man, Frogger, and a gazillion more.
Eventually, Nintendo brought us my ultimate, all-time favorite video game, Super Mario Bros. I still play that one now and then, and even now, the catchy, super-recognizable, doot-doot-doot, doo-doo-doo-doo, music is bopping around inside my head.
Gradually, games got more sophisticated, and I was introduced to computer gaming, which opened up an awesome world of Dungeons & Dragons and various fantasy role-playing games that would keep me sitting in front of a computer screen for days. Days. Not kidding. To this day, I can only start a fantasy RPG if I know I have a break in deadlines and a week straight of no commitments. If you watch The Big Bang Theory, you’ll recognize me in an episode where Penny can’t stop playing a Conan The Barbarian game…dressed in sweats, food piled up everywhere, Cheetos in her hair. (I have no pride when playing a game.) *shakes fist* Curse you, Dungeon Siege! Curse you!
Now, my love of video games isn’t limited to those available only on consoles or computers…the invention of apps for cell phones and tablets has drawn me into a brand new way to waste time. I’m currently enamored by Candy Crush and Star Trek: Trexels.
I might be a little addicted.
Which is why Hunter, the hero of my newest MoonBound Clan Vampires book, Chained By Night, can also often be found kicking back with a game controller in his hands. For him, though, it’s not as much of an addiction as it is a way to relax. To clear his head. To let off some steam. (He really likes the games that are vampire vs. human, and coincidentally, he’s also a big fan of Super Mario Bros.)
So what about you, dear reader? Do you like video games? What is your all-time favorite? Pac-Man? Fallout? Baldur’s Gate? Tetris? Inquiring minds want to know!
