As any voracious reader knows, there are so many books out there, it can be hard to choose just what to read next. So what could be better than a hand-picked recommendation from someone in the know? Every Wednesday the XOXOAD team likes to find out what some of its favorite authors are reading; today we’re thrilled to welcome author Fran Pergamo to share her favorite picks of the moment!
Summer is just another word for reading binge. During the rest of the year, I’m usually happy reading one book at a time, but during the warmer months, I like to read three or four at a time. I wish I could say this is a throwback to high school days, when I was supposed to read assigned literature while lazing on the beach, but I confess this is not the case.
Right now I’m reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, which is a historically intriguing novel set in World War II Europe. So far I love it, although the literary style can only be compared to watching a fast-paced TV commercial that leaves your brain in catch-up mode to your senses. The other book I’m reading is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, which is a memoir about a successful woman who grew up in a dysfunctional, sometimes-homeless family. It reads like a novel, so I have to keep reminding myself that the author is actually telling her story.
I also just finished the biography of Catherine the Great by Robert K. Massie, which I enjoyed immensely. You don’t have to be a history geek to read about some of these historic monarchs and be thoroughly entertained. Their stories prove the adage that truth is stranger than fiction!
