I came up with the idea for Are You My Boyfriend? nearly six years before I actually wrote it. In the summer of 2006 I’d been out of college (and out of my college relationship) for about a year. I was working full-time in the children’s division at a book publisher in New York, and more or less dating full-time on nights and weekends.

I guess the combination of constantly reading children’s books and constantly meeting guys who weren’t right for me made something click, because that August I drafted myself an email:

Will You Be My Boyfriend?–take on Are You My Mother? go around meeting different men…a musician, a stock trader, a painter, a consultant, a construction guy, someone in advertising, a nonprofit worker–jewish, catholic, foreign . . . trying to find her boyfriend

I never sent that email, and other than continuing to wonder “Are you my boyfriend?” whenever I met someone new, I mostly forgot about the idea until a friend’s baby shower in the spring of 2012. The theme of the party was children’s books, and the answer to one of the word games we were playing was P.D. Eastman’s Are You My Mother?

Except I put down Are You My Boyfriend? by accident, and when I laughed and told the other women about my mistake and why I made it, my friends encouraged me to actually write the book. So I did!

Half a decade after my initial inspiration, my approach to the topic was different: I wanted to tell a story that would make people feel better about themselves and about dating, in a format that would be both funny and familiar. Because I’ve read my share of self-help books and romance novels, but sometimes (say, after a disappointing date) I need a quicker fix.

I love that Are You My Boyfriend? gives grown-ups an excuse to take a pause and look at pictures (fantastic pictures, from the talented Simon Greiner) while also putting a fun and empowering spin on a subject that can sometimes feel too serious. I’m very grateful I finally got the book out of my head and into the world, and if you have an #AYMBF story you’d like to share, I’d love to hear it!
