You know what’s great about the Avon Foundation for Women? Not only do they work to increase women’s access to mammograms, help labs get critical supplies they need, and just all-around promote programs that will hopefully one day bring about the end of breast cancer, but sometimes they also do all these things in a bar.
That’s right, the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is just around the corner (Oct 19-20 in NYC, though other cities follow later)—a 2-day walk that raises pledge money to help Avon do all of the aforementioned things, and a couple of lucky XOXOAfterDarkers managed to be at the right neighborhood establishment at the right time to lend a helping hand. Sure, they didn’t win anything with the raffle tickets they bought (not like some British bloke who apparently hoards rabbits’ feet), but they did get to do a small part in helping solve a problem that has plagued too many women for too long. They also heard some great music and met a bunch of interesting folks.
One of the helpful Avon walkers, Carmen (pictured here), has the right attitude—BIG OR SMALL, SAVE THEM ALL! And it was great to see so many people come out for the cause. Some were there to support their mothers, daughters, spouses, friends, or coworkers. Others without direct connections to the disease were there because it felt like a good way to help our communities.
And suddenly, the XOXOAfterDarkers had an epiphany: without breasts, there would be no romance novels. (Okay, some wise-gal will say, “But what about M/M romances?” To which we respond—remember, men can get breast cancer, too, so this is an Everybody Issue.)
Thus, we have yet another reason to echo Carmen’s (T-shirt) call: BIG OR SMALL, SAVE THEM ALL!
