Silver Crown

How much do we love this article that ran in today’s Salon.com? Prison inmates are not allowed to have “obscene” reading material, apparently, but in the case of Andres Martinez, the book corrections officers confiscated was paranormal erotica–The Silver Crown, a Black Lace title, by Mathilde Madden.

The case has gone all the way up to the 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco, says Salon, and although news outlets are tickled by the notion of a prisoner fighting for his right to read werewolf novels, the case has much broader significance in determining the level to which inmates can have their First Amendment rights abridged.

You can read all of Laura Miller’s article here and see the court’s opinion here.

What books would YOU fight for the right to read?
