Memorial Day has come and gone, which means it’s officially the season of white pants (eh), outdoor barbeques (yes!), unbearable subway heat (ugh), and . . . WEDDINGS! Of course, weddings can happen at any time of the year, but for most of us summer tends to bring with it an onslaught of invitations. I, for one, will likely dance to the Isley Brothers at least five times in various cities between now and Labor Day.
All the festivities naturally got me thinking about some of my favorite fictional nuptials, both on screen and on the page.
IMHO, The Princess Bride sets the bar for wedding scenes. “And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva.”
Steve Martin’s interior monologue in Father of the Bride is another personal favorite.
Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s ceremony in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ranks high on the list of weddings I wish I had attended (before the Death Eaters arrive, of course).
As for most awkward wedding, I’d go with Jane Eyre, who finds out that “Speak now, or forever hold your peace” is not just a customary part of the ceremony. Thanks to an eleventh-hour declaration by Mr. Briggs, poor Jane finds out that her groom is already married and calls it off.
My new favorite wedding scene occurs in Star Crossed by Jennifer Echols. This fun and sexy contemporary romance is set in Las Vegas, so suffice it to say that the wedding is somewhat . . . unorthodox.
What are some of your favorite wedding scenes?
